Bow And Arrow Hunting

A Bow Hunter's Shopping List - Useful Things That Make The Hunting Experience Worthwhile!

While most hunters use guns now, there was a time before the gun was around where all hunting was done with a bow and arrow. Hunting with a bow and arrow gives the hunter much more of a challenge, and much more skill is involved for a successful hunt. Hunting with a bow is also more retro; harkening back to the beginnings of man when hunting was necessary for survival. To start out bow hunting though, a few supplies are required, and doing some research can help a hunter determine what's right for him.

The biggest investment a hunter will make is on his bow and arrows. A bow should not be an item to go cheap on. Price is in direct proportion to quality in this instance. A cheap bow will result in poor kills, or no kills at all. Browse your local archery store and talk to the expert about what type of hunting you want to do and the best bow for the job, but don't buy just yet. Find a few favorites in the store, then go home and do your research. Doing the necessary research will result in an investment you'll be using years down the line.

Arrows are another item you should have in great supply. Always have extra on hand; wounding an animal and not having enough arrows to finish the job can get very ugly, very fast. Another supply to always have extra of is bow wire. It's not uncommon for the wire to break when pulling it back, not having extra on hand will make for a very disappointing trip.

Another item that is often overlooked by the newcomer is a leather glove. Pulling back on the bow can be much tougher on the hands than most people realize, having the glove to protect it will make all the difference between a good hunt and a bad one. Many hunters develop blisters and chafing because they didn't realize they needed gloves. The glove will also help to improve your grip on the bow, which in turn improves your shot.

Bow hunting is an adventure harkening back to ancient man. There is no better way for a hunter to feel in direct connection with nature than pulling the wire taut, aiming, and then releasing the arrow at the target. Be sure to wear gloves on every trip, and spend the time and money on a good bow and arrows to increase the chances of a worthwhile hunt.

What should I get my brother for a birthday present?
Ok so my brother is 8 turning 9 and his birthday is January 20. I am going to a mall tonight that has Target, Old Navy, Dicks, Dillards, Finish Line, Steve and Barry's and those are all the boys stores. I want to spend $10 - 25 since I am only 13 and don't have a lot of money. He is VERY into hunting (my family thinks that he has OCD with hunting), football, video games and some other small things but thats pretty much it. He has most of the Madden football video games, tons of footballs, a bow and arrow, hunting clothes, bb gun, and my dad is taking him hunting for a birthday present. I thought about a magazine subscription, but he already has Sports Illustrated Kids and just looks at some pics in it. So what should I get him? Ya I am being nice - especially since he doesn't give me anything for my birthday! He has a lot of Cabelas hunting video games also.

I out this in Grade-Schooler but I generally get better responses in this category so thats why I put it here. He has a pocket knife. Ya he loves Bass Pro Shop and Cabelas too. I was thinking a giftcard to Dicks because Bass Pro Shop and Cabelas are kind of far so we dont go there to often.

Can you tell me about bow and arrow hunting?
I'm really not a gun person. I don't like them at all, but the prospect of bow and arrow hunting is somewhat more appealing to me. I know that there's a lot of careful planning that can go into hunting, including finding an appropriate spot, using special scents to attract animals and repel your own scent, getting appropriate licenses and permissions, etc, etc... but I'm just curious as to how effective using a bow and arrow really is? I realize that at high velocity a point object can be very deadly, but if I don't hit my target in a vital spot (neck, heart, head), will my shot basically become useless and end up in me losing my arrow? I guess I'm just trying to compare the effectiveness of a gun vs. a bow and arrow. Can you give me any big benefits of bow and arrow hunting compared with guns? Thanks!
