Looking for Deer Hunting Tips: Don't Get Caught With Buck Fever
Ever heard of the story of the hunter walking right off the tree stand forgetting it is 13 feet off the ground? (Thank god for safety straps.) How about the time someone seemed paralyzed and couldn't even get the rifle up. All things can go south it seems in the face of Buck Fever.
What is Buck Fever? Just for the fun of it I did a search on it. Hunters know what it is. Doctors seem to think it is the elevated heart rate you get when you are out of shape, excited or physically exerting yourself after a year-long treatment of inactivity and office work. I even had a definition that included a heart attack due to deer hunting exertion. I think the true meaning of the word is kind of lost on those guys. What I think of when I think of Buck Fever is the excitement, the elevated heart rate, the escalated breathing when your target comes into view. The moment you have been waiting for, training for, preparing for and drooling over since last fall! But the trouble is your nervous system is on overdrive and you seem to lose logic, capability and control...making for a very poor hunting story later or worse yet an injury to yourself or the game.
The Yoga of hunting I have heard some pretty interesting ideas over the years on how to overcome this. Maybe we should call this stuff the Yoga of hunting…that is learning to control and override your body's reactions.
Trophy whitetail hunting I have a friend who hunts for trophy whitetail and when he is in target practice, he runs around until he is breathing heavy and practically panting and then picks up his bow. He says it mimics the real thing. If you can control your heavy breathing, racing heart and hit the target, you might be better prepared for what that might feel like when the real situation arises. This may look silly, but nothing is more depressing than watching that Big One get away due to poor control of response out there.
Control the breath I haven't tried that one, but the thing I find most useful is controlling my breath. The slowing of the breath, the deep inhalation and the focusing on the breathing makes my heart slow down and my mind stop racing. Then I remind myself mentally to take my time. If the shot is not ideal I don't take it. I have faith that there will be another opportunity and another day. I don't want to risk injury to such a fine specimen because I couldn't calm down. Hunting is legitimate, unnecessary injury is disastrous. You see part of the problem in Buck Fever, is the mind takes control. Visions of hunting stories, trophies, antler chandeliers and so forth come bursting forward. The pressure is also created by the time line restrictions. Maybe this is your last weekend out there. So you are all pressured up to not fail, which in some ways make you more likely to fail.
Visualization If you want to keep your mind busy, try visualizing the exact movement you will take in every point of entry where a buck may come forth. Tree stand time can be a little tedious anyway, so can't hurt to give the mind a little exercise. Make this exercise as realistic as possible. If you can almost smell the deer and feel the cool breeze on your face, and the excitement: then you are doing visualization correctly. Some people I know even try to pick the exact hair to aim at. Details such as head up, head down, deer standing still versus walking slowly all these can add to the realistic nature of the exercise and the amount that this will help you when the time comes. Visualization and mental imagery is used in all athletic fields to train the mind and the body about the outcome, it is no different here. And for gosh sakes, if you see the deer of a lifetime and have decided to take the shot, NEVER look at the antlers again! Focus on the vitals and only the vitals. Never get distracted by the head again. This may be where the excitement is, but if you can't focus on what is important here, you will be having another "I almost had it" story to tell. Good luck and may your trophy whitetail hunt be successful.

Why is it legal to hunt with a bow and arrow but illegal to hunt with a crossbow?
Seems kind of pointless if you ask me. I called Arizona game and fish and they said to hunt with a crossbow I must have a crossbow permit meaning I should be disabled.
I am just trying to verify this but the lady said it is illegal to hunt rabbit with a crossbow?
It barely has a difference..

Idea for a ps3 game, do you think it would sell/work?
I am a fan of sandbox games, I know it's sad... lol... I like wondering around and just doing "stuff"...
Don't get me wrong the missions are great and I do really enjoy them, however there is something fun about just wondering around either helping people or causing havoc etc...
I like the GTA series (most san andreas) with "STUFF" you could do.... Go to the burger bar and get tubby, go to the gym get muscly, go to the shop and buy out fits, customise cars etc.
I like red dead redemption for the same reasons, buying things with the money I earn, helping people, or not helping people...
My idea would be a post apocalyptic scene, who knows why, nuclear warfare?!?! Basically it would be a sort of "Book of Eli" environment, one thing that really puts me off the apocalyptic games out there now are these weird creatures and space age guns... I just want normal people but a new environment. It could be crazy, there would be gangs of people marauding around every now and again, you could choose to engage them in a fight (to reap great benefits from searching their bodies if you survive) or hide and let them pass, there could be towns like in the book of eli which are run by not very nice people, you could free them from any tyrannical grip.. upgrade the towns once you take over with either money or stuff that you find/collect.. You could work with the guy leading the town for a brief period being his right hand man, and perhaps face terrible decisions. I remember in the latest gta you could either kill people or let them live, there could be the same sort of situations.
In RDR you could be either loved and famous to people, or you could be hated and feared by people, each would have its perks (lets say if you're 100% loved some shop keepers might give you stuff for free, if you're 100% hated some my give you stuff for free through fear, but there could be consequences etc).
There could situations like in the book of eli where people are being attacked and you have to make a choice whether to help them out (and risk injury or death or other things) or you can choose to ignore the situations...
You could get cars or something and perhaps upgrade them, find parts from scrap cars, and maybe a guy in a town who used to be a mechanic could help you out for a fee and upgrade the cars (or vehicles)..
I suppose I just don't want any mutants, or any ridiculous guns, just give me a few machine guns, pistols, crossbow, etc. maybe a few creepy people who could be cannibals...
The story itself doesn't have to be based on the book of eli (the guy doesn't have to be blind with a Braille bible), I only use that movie as an example because I enjoyed the scenery in it and the fact it was not riddled with mutated creatures...
So what do you guys think? Anything to add?
I suppose this is only a dream as I have heard that unless you make the games yourself there is 0% chance of anyone listening and making it... but still I was just seeing if there was interest for something like this and whether people would feel it was cool...
Yeh, totally agree the emphasis should be on survival, hence the decisions you have to make... I think there can be a sort of survival of humanity theme too, hence helping restore towns, making them nice places to live... I think of Assassins creed where you have money and you can spend it on that town and stuff is rebuilt and altered to make it "prettier" and generate more money, so that sort of theme could be cool...
Ramon, you need to think hard about the name of that game, I want it!
I don't know anything about oblivion, but yes a sort of fallout, gta, rdr, assassins creed sort of combo.. lol...
In all honesty I was looking for this type of game a while ago and I read about fall out, I thought it was what I was after, but after looking at some of the game play it was perfect until it got to mutants, then I just got pissed off... Mutants and monsters and that kind of stuff just piss me off... I just look at the game and it goes from something that could be so good and "realistic" to "fantasy" (In my opinion..)
Apparently you can't read that I said "no mutants"...
Avatouir I have been going through your list, it seems like the only one that has no mutants/zombies is I am alive, I read about it and I like the sound of it, the only downside is that it is not a sandbox game. :( If only someone would make a game like that but as a sandbox game... lol.. picky much?
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX NOOOOOOOOOO MUTANTS!!!!! XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
THEREFORE IT IS NOT FALLOUT3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I appreciate the input however that is one of the HUGE basis for the kind of game I am describing... I haaaaaaaaaate mutants, or zombies (for this idea anyway!!!!!)
btw, it would be a 3rd person game but the aiming would be 1st person!
