What Is Longbow Archery?

From the stone age there is evidence of flat bows and "D" section longbows in UK and on the continent. In the 12th century, the longbow was developed by the Welsh and used against the English. By the time of 100-year war with France, the longbow archers outnumbered the men at arms in almost every major conflict. In some battles longbow man formed as much as 90% of the fighting force. The later part of the 16th century saw the decline of the longbow as a military weapon. Skills to shoot the longbow to weapon standard needed regular and intensive practice, which was compulsory in England in the middle ages. Arrows used in longbow shooting have to be made out of wood and have natural feathers.

Originally the longbow was made entirely of yew, mainly from Spain and Italy. Because of the wetter climate English yew was coarser - grained and therefore generally less suitable. To obtain yew for longbows staves, duties for wine were set as a given ratio of number of staves of yew for each barrel of wine imported. Nowadays it is difficult to find yew of the same close grained quality that was available in Europe during the middle ages. The best source of yew is now from Oregon in the United States.

The physical evidence of the longbow and arrows original characteristics can be seen in Portsmouth in the items recovered from the Mary rose. More than 3, 500 arrows and 137 longbows were found. The bows were made of a single baulk of yew. This was cleft into triangular billets (using the sapwood layer to preserve the natural laminate of the wood). The heartwood performs better under compression and the sapwood under tension. The bows were shaped in a D-section with a flat back of sapwood and a rounded belly of heartwood.

What is the best bow for someone new to archery to buy?
I have recently had the opportunity to learn to shoot a traditional bow(longbow/recurve). I would love to keep learning and practicing but to do that where I live you really need to have your own bow. I don't want to spend a lot of money to start with since I am not sure how long this will last, if I will want to keep shooting or if I will lose interest at some point. Any ideas on the best bow for a new archer? (a few details for sizing, i am a female between 18-27, 5'3 and about 135.)

Beginner Archery Set?
I want to start archery. Is a wooden recurve or longbow better for a beginner? Is there a suggested bow (with no mechanical contraptions attached) and/ or arrows set I should buy?

Composite bows in pathfinders and D&D?
I was wondering exactly how the composite longbow worked in pathfinders. I get that you add the strength modifier to damage but I was wondering if you add the dexterity modifier to damage as well. Stats being used Str:12 Dex:19

Pretty important archery question?
I'm fifteen, been shooting since I was 8. I feel pretty stupid for having to ask this, given how many years I've been involved in archery, but it's better to ask now than to make an idiotic purchase later. My father normally takes me into shops to buy my bows, but I no longer live with him nor do I plan on consulting him. I'm right handed. I'm purchasing a longbow online and I'm not sure if I'm supposed to get a left or right handed one. What I mean by this, since I am right handed I hold the bow with my left hand, I draw the string with my right. So, do I buy a left or right handed bow? Thanks so much for any answers.
