Whitetail Hunting Rips - Choose a Stand For Successful Whitetail Hunting

Whitetail Hunting Rips

The best way to bag a trophy is to ensure you see plenty of deer. The very best way to see as many deer as possible is to find a stand, sit there quietly and wait. When we say wait, we mean wait while making no possible noise.

Nature gave the whitetail deer exceptional vision, indeed their eyesight is legendary among hunters. In reality, their eye sight is more geared toward picking up motion than noticing stationery objects. That's why it doesn't seem to matter if we wear hunter orange, as long as we remain still. So sitting still, especially when the wind is in your favor, pays huge dividends.

I have fallen asleep while glassing a slope looking for animals in the warm sunlight. When I awoke, deer (and elk)were walking everywhere in plain sight! I have to tell you, this has happened more than once. Most hunters I know have been sitting down eating lunch or answering nature's call when they look up and see big game. What was the common denominator? When I fell asleep or was eating lunch or doing my other business, I was quiet and still.

Choosing a stand can be tricky, especially in areas where the hunt pressure is high. Look for an area where there's evidence of deer activity, a trail between known food sources and bedding areas, for example. Whitetail Hunting Rips

Other good locations for a whitetail hunt stand are at natural funnels in the terrain, where the movement of animals are restricted for one reason or another. These shallow depressions are commonly called saddles.

Similarly, placing a hunt stand a bit further out than the average Joe is willing to trek is a great way to bag a whitetail when the hunt pressure is at it's highest.

Avoid placing a hunt stand near fresh scrapes - most whitetail deer do not revisit these and you could find yourself waiting a long time for nothing.

Another word of caution - if you are in your stand for more than eight hours and you haven't seen any deer, be sure you're masking your scent effectively. Either that, or you picked a poor spot to sit.

In short, if you choose your stand carefully, sit downwind from the deer crossing, remain motionless and just be patient, that perfect whitetail is bound to cross your sights. Whitetail Hunting Rips

For the exsperienced fellas?
I was hunting three weeks ago for whitetail up in east Colorado. My dad and I were hunting up on some private farm land. This land hasen't been hunted in 5 years so the deer are comfortable there. My dad and I got settled in by these group of trees and about 500-600 yards away (I don't have a range finder, dad's too cheap XD) were these small heard of deer. There was this massive 10 point buck with a lot of mass. I could tell that he was a mature buck because when I saw him his neck and bodyy was so big I had mistaken him for a cow at first glance. I stalked these deer for about three hours but couldn't get a good shot at em because they were 400 yards away or more most of the time. I got a smaller 8 point buck that day but missed the big one. I plan on next year going back and getting him if I get another tag. I shoot a Savage 30-06 with a 180 grain bullet right now. I just shoot remington core-lockt bullets. Is it possible if I practice a lot this next year to shoot a deer around 500 yards away? Or am I just dreamin, or taking too much of a chance? My other question is I want to start practicing at taking 350 yard shots with my gun. What is the best way to improve my shooting skills? My dad suggested putting a brake on my 30-06 and practice with that.(the lower recoil will alow me to shot more rounds in one sitting) My gun smith suggested getting a 204 and practice prarie dog shooting at 400-1000 yards. And Then I had an old friend of mine tell me that I should try putting reduces recoil bullets in my 243 and practice with that then move up to my 30-06 with reduced recoil bullets. (My dad didn't think this was a good idea seeing as reduced recoil bullets have less powder and they are only 125 grain bullets and that messes up my trejectory and point of impact too much and I should just stay with my regular bullets) So what are your opinions? Does anyone have any exsperience shooting an animal at 300+ yards. I'd like to hear your story. Just give me any good adivce really. I love animals and I don't want to take too much of a chance on them at wounding them. I don't want to see them suffer. That's why i didn't take the 400+yrd shot at first. I didn't trust myself to hit where I wanted. But it was hard not to take a wild shot at a buck that massive. Also does anyone know of any good books or websites that give great advise on Whitetail hunting? Maybe in the plains to be specific. That would help a lot. I also had a doe in heat bleat in my back pack, but I didn't want to take a chance at scaring them away because I have never used calls before. I want to get a rattle pack but don't know if it's worth the money to get one. Down here whitetails are much more agressive than mule deer so I figured a rattle pack might help bring them in closer. Any good videos that you know of that would teach me how to use calls right? and what calls would you reccomend if any? Thanks to everyone in advance! Alright I would like to let people know that I have absolutly no money. So I can't afford a new rifle. I don't want a new one anyways because I like this rifle and need to use it to practice for africa.
